REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF PARACENTROTUS LIVIDUS AT TWO SARDINIAN COASTAL AREAS

Abstract
Reproductive cycle of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) at two Sardinian areas, subjected to different levels of fishing pressure, was evaluated by the analysis of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological examinations of gonads. The two populations examined showed different annual GSI trends, as well as slightly different timelines in the reproductive cycle. The histological approach together with the analysis of the gonadosomatic index resulted to be a valuable tool for a correct description of the reproductive cycle of P. lividus.
