Abstract
In this study the relationships between sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia
lixula) and their predatory fishes (the two sparids Diplodus sargus sargus and D. vulgaris and the
two labrids Coris julis and Thalassoma pavo) were investigated at the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo
Marine Protected Area. Results suggest that Diplodus fishes can play a more relevant role than the two
labrid fishes for the control of sea urchin populations, which may have important implications in terms
of conservation and management purposes.
