The shell growth of Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis in windy condition: A preliminary evaluation

27/07/2021

Brundu, G., Pagani, S., & Graham, P.

Abstract

As a part of a more complete and bigger investigation, this study evaluates preliminarily the effects of two rearing systems, floating bag and Australian basket (Figure 1), on the shell increasing of two oyster species, C. gigas and O. edulis, in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon exposed to the wind. The latter is often the main force responsible for the water movement in Mediterranean lagoons (De Marchis et al., 2011; Ferrarin & Umgiesser, 2005);  therefore, we hypothesized a lower increment of the oyster's shell in winter, when a stronger wind speed increases the water movement, swinging the farming gears and promoting the shell chipping.
